ICF System Specification
CSI SECTION 09772 - Impact Systems Exterior Coating System over Insulated Concrete Forms, ICF
(Parex, Inc. EIFS Standard System, Class PB)

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 SUMMARY

  1. Section Description: Section includes coatings installed over insulating concrete form systems approved by Parex, Inc.
1.02 DEFINITIONS
  1. Definitions:

    1. Edgewrapping: Continuation of fiberglass reinforced base coat around the edge of the insulation board and into the rough opening of the wall.
1.03 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
  1. Description of Parex Impact System:

    1. Parex Impact System: an Exterior Coating System consisting of Polymer Modified Base Coat with embedded Reinforcing Fabric Mesh, Primer (Optional), and Finish Coat.

  2. Parex Impact System Functional Criteria:

    1. ICF Wall Systems:

      1. Wall Dimensional Tolerances: Flat with 1/4 inch within any 4 foot radius or as defined by ICF manufacturer.

      2. Inclined surfaces shall follow guidelines listed below:

        1) Minimum slope: 6" of vertical rise in 12" of horizontal run.
        2) For sloped surfaces run of slope shall be a maximum of 12".
        3) Usage not meeting above criteria shall be approved in writing by Parex prior to installation.

    1. Impact Resistance Classification: Parex Impact Systems shall be classified in accordance with EIMA for EIFS classification and impact ranges as follows:

      1. Medium Impact Resistance, 49-90 inch-lbs Impact Range.

    2. Expansion Joints: Continuous expansion joints shall be installed at the following locations:

      1. At building expansion joints.

      2. At ICF wall expansion joints.

      3. Where Parex Impact System abuts other materials.

      4. Where significant structural movement occurs, such as at:

        1) Changes in building shape and/or structural system.

      5. Where substrate changes.

    3. Building Code Conformance: the construction shall be acceptable for use under the building code in force in the jurisdiction of the project.

    4. Provision for non-combustible construction: Coating system shall be approved for use over the foam plastic in multi-story non-combustible construction.

    5. Provision for termite inspection: where required by code or pest control, do not install Parex coatings on foam plastic that is less than 6 inches above grade. Consult ICF manufacturer for termite control ICF design.
1.04 SUBMITTALS
  1. General: Submit Samples, Reports, Certificates and Manufacturer's Warranty in accordance with Division 1 General Requirements Submittal Section.
1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE
  1. Qualifications:

    1. Exterior Coating Manufacturer: Shall have marketed Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems in the United States for at least five years.

    2. Exterior Coating Applicator: Shall have attended an Education Seminar by Parex in installation of Parex EIF Systems; Shall possess a current certificate of education; Shall be experienced and competent in installation of plaster-like materials.
1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
  1. Delivery: Deliver materials supplied by Parex to site location in original unopened containers with labels intact. Upon arrival, materials shall be inspected for damage, and manufacturer notified of any discrepancies. Unsatisfactory materials shall not be used.

  2. Storage: Store materials supplied by Parex in a cool, dry location, out of sunlight, protected from weather and other harmful environment, and at a temperature above 40 degrees F and below 110 degrees F in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
1.07 PROJECT / SITE CONDITIONS
  1. Environmental Conditions: In accordance with manufacturer's requirements, comply with:

    1. Ambient air temperature: Minimum 40 degrees F and rising, and remain so for 24 hours thereafter.

    2. Do not apply Parex Impact System materials to substrates whose temperature is below 40 degrees F.

    3. Do not apply Parex Impact System during inclement weather unless appropriate protection is employed.

    4. Protect Parex Impact System materials from weather and other damage.

  1. Provide Parex Inc. five-year material warranty for Parex Impact System
PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 MANUFACTURERS

2.02 PAREX IMPACT SYSTEM MATERIALS
  1. Parex Base Coat:

    1. I-C One Base Coat 308: Copolymer based, factory blend of cement proprietary ingredients; self gauging.

  2. Parex Reinforcing Mesh:

    1. Standard Non-Woven Mesh 353: Weight 6 oz. per sq. yd. (203 g/m²); standard non-woven mesh 353 protected against alkali with a 40 grams per square yard (48 g/m²) coating.

    2. Long Detail Mesh 355: Weight 4.5 oz. per sq. yd. (155 g/m³). Reinforcing mesh used for wall with frequent details.

    3. Short Detail Mesh 356: Reinforcing mesh used for backwrapping and details, and for lapping joints of Intermediate Impact 10 Mesh 358.10.

    4. Self Adhesive Detail Mesh 352: Reinforcing mesh used for complex details.

    5. Intermediate Impact 10 Mesh 358.10: Weight 10 oz per sq. yd. (346 g/m³). Reinforcing mesh used with Parex Impact System, to achieve High Impact Strength (90 to 150 inch-pound)

    6. Corner Mesh 357: 7.2 oz. per sq. yd. (249 g/m³). Reinforcing mesh used as corner reinforcement.

  3. Parex Primers:

    1. Primer 310: 100% acrylic based coating to prepare surfaces for Parex finishes.

    2. Sanded Primer 313: 100% acrylic based coating to prepare surfaces for Parex Cerastone finish.

  4. Parex Finish Coat: Factory blended, 100% acrylic polymer based synthetic finish, integrally colored. Finish type, texture and color as selected by Architect.

  5. Water: Shall be cool, clean, potable and free of foreign matter; utilized to adjust workability.
PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01 MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Compliance: Comply with manufacturer's instructions for installation of exterior coatings.
3.02 EXAMINATION
  1. Examination of Substrate:

    1. Advise General Contractor or Architect of discrepancies preventing installation. Do not proceed with work until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.

    2. Correction of unsatisfactory conditions of substrates installed by other trades shall be responsibility of the General Contractor.
3.03 PROTECTION AND COORDINATION
  1. Protection: Protect surrounding material surfaces and areas during installation of Parex Impact System. Protect Parex Impact System from weather and other damage immediately after installation and until installation of sealant and flashing.
3.04 INSTALLATION
  1. General: Installation shall conform to this specification and Parex EIFS written instructions and drawing details.

    1. Install edge-wrap mesh and base coat at system terminations.

    2. Repair areas of damaged insulation with slivers/patches of identical material.

    3. Rasp irregularities off insulation board to obtain uniform and flat surface.

    4. Bond supplemental EPS shapes as indicated on the drawings. Bond shapes to EPS or to dry reinforced base coat using I-C One 308 as an adhesive. Allow 24 hour to dry.

    5. Apply base coat and bed mesh into wet base coat; mesh will be visible. When first layer of base coat is dry to the touch, apply a second layer of base coat to achieve a total dry base coat thickness of 1/8 inch (3.1 mm).

    6. Apply primer to double base coat after drying.

    7. Finish Coat: Apply finish coat to match specified finish type, texture, and color.
